Optimizing small blood volumes to prevent canceled tests in clinical trials for pediatric patients

In clinical trials for pediatric patients, canceled tests due to insufficient blood volume are a challenge for sponsors and cause unnecessary stress for patients and their families. For these young patients, every milliliter of blood drawn is precious. Q2 Solutions recently advanced a pediatric initiative, born out of a specific client concern regarding blood volumes, for a study involving very young pediatric subjects with spinal muscular atrophy. While any patient under 18 years is considered pediatric, the focus of this initiative is on subjects that are six years old and under.

This insight brief covers:

  • The challenges of safety testing for drugs in pediatric patients where sample volumes may be limited
  • The protocol prioritizing a subset of tests for short samples
  • Sample collection kits for pediatric patients that minimize the number of canceled tests
